"The Parallel Lives"
Plutarch sets up the life of the Gracchi brothers with background knowledge regarding Cornelia, their mother. Cornelia was the daughter of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Major, hero of the second Punic War 208-201. Their family had a lot of history and Rome and their name became more and more well known especially during and after the time of the Gracchi brothers.
~Plutarch said, "Cornelia took charge of the children and of the estate, and showed herself so discreet, so good a mother, and so magnanimous, that Tiberius was thought to have been made no bad decision when her elected to die instead of such a woman," (Plutarch, 1.4), which means he knew Cornelia could handle herself and take care of the children. The Gracchi brothers had an excellent and strong mother figure to look up to, which helped them follow their beliefs.
